The Best Time to Visit Göbekli Tepe

By Kenan Aydin2026-04-025 min read

Choosing the right time of year to visit Göbekli Tepe makes a real difference. The site sits on an exposed ridge in southeastern Turkey, where summers are hot and winters can be surprisingly cold. Two windows in the year strike the best balance between weather, daylight, and visitor numbers.

Spring (mid-March to late May)

Spring is widely considered the best time. Daytime temperatures typically range from 18°C to 28°C, the surrounding Harran plain turns green after winter rains, and the morning light makes for excellent photography of the T-pillar carvings. This is also the start of the active excavation season, so visitors sometimes catch glimpses of ongoing fieldwork from the walkways.

Autumn (September to early November)

The second-best window. Temperatures drop from the brutal August highs back into a comfortable 22°C to 30°C range, and the golden afternoon light through October is hard to beat. Crowds thin significantly after the school holidays end in early September.

Summer (June to August)

Plan around the heat. Daytime temperatures regularly reach 38°C to 42°C and the open landscape offers no shade. If you must visit in summer, take the earliest morning tour or a sunrise tour, drink far more water than feels necessary, and consider skipping a long midday visit altogether.

Winter (December to February)

Quiet but unpredictable. Daytime temperatures are 8°C to 14°C, mornings can drop below freezing, and occasional rain or even snow closes the walkways. The trade-off is having the site almost entirely to yourself on a clear day.

Time of day

Whatever month you choose, the first two hours after the site opens and the last hour before sunset are when the carvings are best lit and the walkways are least crowded. Tour groups generally arrive between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
