Getting to Göbekli Tepe
The site sits about 15 km north-east of Şanlıurfa and is an easy day trip — most visitors arrive by car or taxi in under half an hour.
Göbekli Tepe lies on a limestone ridge in the Örencik area, roughly 15 km north-east of central Şanlıurfa in south-eastern Türkiye. The most common base is Şanlıurfa itself, a large city with hotels, the archaeology museum and good onward connections. From there the site is close, well signposted and reached on paved roads.
By car or taxi
Driving is the simplest option. From central Şanlıurfa the journey takes about 20–25 minutes along a paved, well-signposted road, with a free car park at the visitor center. Taxis are readily available in the city and can be hired for the trip, often with an agreed wait-and-return; many hotels and local operators can also arrange a car or a half-day tour. If you are renting a car, the route is straightforward and signed for "Göbeklitepe."
By air
The nearest airport is Şanlıurfa GAP Airport (GNY), with daily domestic flights from Istanbul and Ankara. From the airport you can continue to the city or directly to the site by taxi or pre-arranged transfer. Flying into Şanlıurfa is the quickest way to reach the region from elsewhere in Türkiye.
By public transport
Public-transport options to the site itself are limited. There is no frequent dedicated service to the mound, so most visitors who do not drive rely on a taxi or an organised tour from Şanlıurfa. If you intend to use buses or minibuses (dolmuş), check current routes and timings locally, and plan your return in advance, as departures back to the city can be infrequent.
From the visitor center to the mound
The visitor center — where you find tickets, restrooms and a café — sits about 1 km from the archaeological site. A free shuttle covers this short approach, and it is also walkable for those who prefer to go on foot. The shuttle drops you near the start of the elevated boardwalk that circles above the main enclosures.
Please verify before you travel. Flight schedules, shuttle operation, taxi fares and public-transport routes change with the season and over time. Confirm current transport details with official and operator sources before your trip.
