Visitor tips

A little planning makes a visit to Göbekli Tepe far richer. Here is how the site is laid out, what to expect on the boardwalk and when to come.

Göbekli Tepe is an active archaeological site as well as a visitor destination, so the experience is carefully managed. You walk above the monuments rather than among them, following a fixed route that protects both the fragile stones and the ongoing excavation.

The canopy and the boardwalk

A large protective canopy shelters the main enclosures from sun and rain. Around and above them runs an elevated wooden boardwalk, and you follow this fixed route as it circles over the great circles, pausing at viewing platforms with interpretive panels along the way. Crucially, you do not enter the excavation trenches or step down among the pillars — the enclosures are viewed from the walkway above. This is what keeps the carvings and the dig safe, and it still gives you a close, clear view down onto the central pillars.

How long to allow

A typical visit lasts about 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on how long you linger over the panels, the views and the carvings. If you are pairing the mound with the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum — strongly recommended, since most of the original finds are displayed there — allow extra time for that on the same day or the next.

Best time to visit

The most comfortable seasons are spring and autumn — broadly April to October for the open season, with the shoulder months most pleasant. Summers are very hot on this exposed ridge, so if you visit between June and August, come early in the day, carry water, and bring sun protection and a hat. There is little natural shade beyond the canopy itself.

What to bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes for the boardwalk and the approach from the visitor center.
  • Sun protection — hat, sunscreen and water — especially in the warmer months.
  • A camera; the carved central pillars of Enclosure D are the highlight.
  • The free companion app, if you would like proximity-triggered audio as you walk the route.

Please verify with official sources before you travel. Entry arrangements change over time, so check them before you visit. Opening hours are seasonal and change over time, so check them in advance. Full step-free accessibility is not guaranteed — the approach is served by a shuttle, but the elevated boardwalk includes steps and ramps; confirm current arrangements before visiting if you have mobility needs.
